The age old question of coffee or tea…well, not really age old, but something I think about often enough. As an avid drinking of any beverage that requires boiled water this is the question that haunts me when I get up in the morning. Is it a coffee day, or a tea day? Usually I compromise. Coffee in the morning and tea in the evening. But sometimes I wonder which one is really better for me. So I thought I’d try and figure it out once and for all.
The 10 Benefits of Drinking Coffee:
1) The caffeine in coffee can help you spot grammar errors like tense and subject verb agreement (but not spelling errors…an excuse to misspell at last!)
2) Women who drink between 2 and 3 cups of coffee a day are at a lower risk for depression than women who don’t drink coffee (but there’s no information about men who drink coffee and depression)
3) Something in caffeinated coffee boosts granulocyte colony stimulating factor (GCSF) which fights off Alzheimer’s disease and saves your brain!
4) Men who drink 6 cups of coffee a day decrease their chance of prostate cancer by 60% (although this doesn’t really help me at all…)
5) Studies have shown drinking coffee can ward off basal cell carcinoma, the most common cancer in the world (so basically a cup of coffee a day keeps the oncologist away…haha, I’m so clever)
6) The more coffee you drink the lower your chances of contracting type 2 diabetes.
7) Drinking several cups of coffee a day could lower your risk for Parkinson’s disease by 25%
8) Drinking coffee can reduce your risk of having a stroke
9) Drinking 1-3 cups of coffee a day actually lowers your risk of heart arrhythmias by 20%
10) A 6-ounce cup of black coffee is only 6 calories, meaning that 12 ounce cup you drink in the morning is only 12 calories, if you add sugar it’s still only 23.

The 10 Benefits of Drinking tea: (there are lots of types of tea, all of which have different benefits, I’m just doing “tea” generically here)
1) Tea contains antioxidants that help you age more gracefully (yay!)
2) Tea has less caffeine than coffee (unless you’re drinking mate) so if you tend to overindulge in your hot drinks it won’t make your heart beat too fast.
3) It helps unclog your arteries and keeps them smooth, meaning if you drink tea it’ll lower your risk of heart attack and stroke
4) People who drink tea long term (10 or more years) have stronger bones than people who don’t…even if you don’t add milk.
5) It contains flouride and tannins which keep your teeth looking pretty and white (but you can counteract this by adding lots of sugar)
6) If you drink five cups of tea over the course of the week (continuously) you’ll boost your immune system.
7) Tea contains polyphenols meaning if you add it to your regular routine they’ll build up and protect your from certain forms of cancer.
8) It’ll keep you hydrated better than coffee because it has less caffeine in it
9) If you don’t add anything to your tea you’re actually drinking a 0 calorie beverage (which knocks coffee’s 6 calories right out of the water)
10) Tea increases your metabolism. If you drink 5 cups of green tea over the course of the day you’ll loose 80 more calories a day than if you don’t drink tea at all.
